Premier League launches new lion logo and identity for 2016/17 season

• New logo will replace the original ‘lion’ badge for newly sponsorless league
• Premier League describes the crest as ‘relevant, modern and flexible’

The Premier League has unveiled its new logo, to be used from the start of next season.

The crowned lion with one paw resting on a football from the current design does feature again, although the new image consists only of its head.

The image is accompanied by the words "Premier League" in a different style of lettering to that used in the present "Barclays Premier League" motif.

The Premier League has been sponsored by Barclays since 2007/08 and is the first change of logo in ten years.

Premier League chiefs insist they could have brought on board a new headline sponsor but have decided to move in a different direction and are able to do so because of the new £5billion TV deal.

Premier League Managing Director, Richard Masters, said: “From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known simply as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted to present ourselves as an organisation and competition.
“We are very pleased with the outcome: a visual identity which is relevant, modern and flexible that will help us celebrate everyone that makes the Premier League.
“We look forward to sharing more details of our new positioning in the coming months.”

The League worked in partnership with global agency DesignStudio and Robin Brand Consultants to create what it describes as "a bold and vibrant identity that includes a modern take on the lion icon -- a symbol that is part of the competition's heritage -- which is flexible in digital and broadcast formats."
